Pebble was launched on October 9th, 2018 amid little fanfare and even littler office space.

Pebble was started by me, Jeff Barson. My first business was a small brick-and-mortar medical clinic in Utah where I had to deal with the the same revenue hassles that every local business has: high overhead, uneven cash flow, and the sick feeling of knowing you’re losing money every time you can’t fill a gap in the schedule. I realized how powerful it would be to have the ability to connect with your customers and sell to them any time. So I built it with Pebble...

Back in 2004 I was running a chain of family medical clinics. We did well but we had the same problem that ever local business has; high fixed costs and time based inventory that was a complete loss if it wasn’t filled.

So, we did what every other medical clinic does when they have a cancellation or schedule change in 2 hours – we got on the phone until it was filled. It was slow, tedious, and wasted everyone’s time, and it wasn’t always successful.

What I really needed was a way to communicate to a defined group with a simple offer (like an appointment cancellation), and managed all of the acceptances and responses. I needed a way to manage my sales and inventory “today”, in the next 6 hours, not the next 6 months.

It was keeping me awake at night.

There weren’t any solutions that worked because they were all too slow (email), too manual (phone calls) or too expensive and big (like advertising).

But local businesses problems are small.

“My client cancelled and I need to fill their appointment time in 2 hours.”
“I need to make another $700 this week to stay out of the red.”
”I need 3 more clients on Friday.”
“I need my best customers to bring in their friends.”

So we asked ourselves a simple question that would later become our mission: Why is it so hard to match my unfilled inventory that I want to fill with the people who would want to fill it?

In the era of instant-everything, it’s crazy that you can’t simply match an offer with your existing customers to control your sales and cash flow. So we set out to make it easier. Because even though we’ve grown, we don’t forget who we’re building Pebble for, because we’ve been there.

And, it’s why we’re obsessed with taking care of our existing customers, because if we don’t care for our existing customers we don’t deserve new ones. So you can count on us to be transparent and do what we say we’re going to.

Why Pebble?

At Pebble, we’re different. We knew from day one we were building something different from other technology companies. Our name represents who we are as a company: we’re simple, human, and small, all of which is embodied in the comfortably familiar name – Pebble.

Simple

We don’t think you should need to be a rocket scientist to use our technology. We obsess over building technology that just works – exactly the way you want it to – without anything getting in your way. That’s why we put design and usability as a premium and keep the rocket science out of sight.

Human

Businesses don’t use technology, people do, and there’s something comforting and familiar about “pebble”. At it’s core local business is about relationships and trust, and Pebble builds those trusted connections. It embodies that old-time familiarity businesses once had with their customers by saying “Hi there, friend”.

Small

Pebble isn’t about nameless and uncontrolled mass-marketing, it’s about sharing something specific with a small group which is much more powerful. It’s about offering something specific right now; an extra few tables at lunch, a short-time appointment that’s been cancelled, or a small reward for loyal customers. It’s about working for small businesses owners who grind it out every day to build something valuable.

We build tools for local business owners.

That’s it. Nothing else. No distractions. Nothing to steal our focus. No kidding ourselves that we can be great at everything. No trying to get-rich-quick and conquer the whole world. We just do our best to conquer our bit of it. So each day we come in and work to solve problems for our customers. We treat them like family, because some of them are. We build the best tech. Constantly improve it. And then let hard working entrepreneurs who know their own businesses best do the rest.

There is a great deal of satisfaction to be gained from making something well, of seeing what you’ve built used to grow a business, pay workers, and provide for a family. It makes the hard work and the obsessing over each and every detail worth all the effort. That’s our reward. That’s why we stick to it.
